AmbaSat at the San Diego Festival of Science & Engineering: Inspiring the Next Generation of Space Explorers

On March 1, 2025, AmbaSat was proudly represented at the San Diego Festival of Science & Engineering, where a dedicated team of mentors and students set up an interactive exhibition booth to showcase the AmbaSat-1 satellite program.

This event, one of the largest STEM festivals in the U.S., provided an incredible opportunity to introduce young minds and science enthusiasts to the world of small satellites, space technology, and long-range communication.

Bringing Space Technology to Life

Since forming their satellite club, the students have been learning about satellite technology, coding, and LoRaWAN communications—and this expo was their chance to put that knowledge into action. Visitors had the rare opportunity to see a working AmbaSat satellite in the U.S. actively communicating with the AmbaSat dashboard in the UK—a real-time demonstration of space technology in action.

Paul Levy, mentor for the team, reflected on the experience:

“The club was thrilled to demonstrate a working AmbaSat satellite and showcase the AmbaSat educational program. Since the start of the club, members have learned about satellites, how to modify and download code, and how to use long-range wide-area-network (LoRaWAN). The club looks forward to being part of the first AmbaSat launch into space!”

Inspiring Future Scientists & Engineers

For the students, this was more than just an exhibition—it was a chance to share their passion for space and technology with the public.

Daniel Levy, club member, described his experience engaging with the visitors:

“I had a great time at the expo. I had the opportunity to share the work we did for the satellite with kids and adults alike. I enjoyed interacting with the kids especially and seeing them be amazed when I told them about our work and the goal of the satellite to reach the atmosphere. One child told me, ‘This is what I want to do when I get older,’ which was incredibly rewarding. I’d love to do something like this again in the future.”

For many, the festival provided an unforgettable confidence boost, reinforcing their passion for space exploration and STEM education.

Brandon Cheah, another student presenter, shared his excitement:

“Showcasing the AmbaSat satellite at the science expo was honestly one of the coolest things I’ve done. The guests seemed really interested, crowding around to check it out and asking me questions about how it works and what it’s for, which made me feel super smart and prepared. I was a little nervous at first, but once I started talking about it, I couldn’t stop—it felt awesome to see people actually care about something I helped build. The whole thing gave me a big confidence boost, and I’m already pumped to do more projects like this!”

The Power of Hands-On Learning

The impact of the event was also felt by Joseph Cheah, a mentor supporting the students, who witnessed firsthand the excitement and curiosity the AmbaSat program sparked in attendees:

“Participating in the science expo to showcase the AmbaSat satellite was an incredibly rewarding experience. The guests were genuinely intrigued, asking thoughtful questions about the satellite’s design and purpose, which made all the preparation worthwhile. Seeing the excitement on their faces reaffirmed how much potential projects like this have to inspire others, and I left the event feeling energized and optimistic about the impact we’re making.”

Looking Ahead to Launch!

With the first AmbaSat-1 CubeSat launch scheduled for 2026, these students will soon see their hard work pay off—taking their own satellite experiments into Low Earth Orbit (LEO)! 🚀

We’re incredibly proud of the team’s efforts and can’t wait to see more students, educators, and space enthusiasts join us on this incredible journey.

A huge thank you to Paul, Daniel, Brandon, Joseph, and all the students for their dedication and passion in representing AmbaSat at the San Diego Festival of Science & Engineering!
